FRANCE - Rhone - Provence Tour

On our journey from Dublin to Rosslare, we stopped at the Ferrycarrig Hotel for a snack. I had heard of the hotel but didn't recall tell of its spectacular location on the shores of the River Slaney. An outstanding chicken sandwich and freshly made hot scone hit the spot.

We arrival at the ferry terminal at 2000hrs. We boarded the Oscar Wilde at 2030 hrs. The weather at the terminal was 12• - much milder than heretofore!!

Having boarded the ferry, we made our way to our cabin. The cabins are very well designed, spacious with an ensuite but bring your hairdryer, shower cap and toiletries !!

On our departure at 2130 hrs, the captain announced that our arrival would be delayed by an hour as there was a strike at Cherburg! Did we not have a French air traffic controllers' strike last week? What's new ? Every summer the French appear to strike. Nothing like discommoding the tourists!! Our ETA is expected to be 1800hrs allowing for the fact that France is an hour ahead and taking into account the hour's delay as a result of the strike.

We decided to take a Sea Leg as the crossing was to be moderate to rough!!
We dined in the formal dining room.  The food and service are first class and the menu included some old favourites such as Steak Rossini together with more modern goat's cheese offerings. €36 for two courses was excellent value especially as a Tain Croze Hermitage at €15 a bottle - a plumy, fruity offering at 12% alcohol was a steal at the price. I trust I will have more to report on the Rhone wines when we visit the wineries later on the trip.

A quick circle of the deck filled the lungs. The sea was fairly choppy.  We retired  and whether it was the Sea Legs or the wine (I'll leave it up to you, dear reader, to decide) I slept soundly and awoke refreshed.

Breakfast in the less formal restaurant proved a ' bit of a disaster' - the kitchen closed and our order hadn't been processed! They had mislaid it !! I think we'll adjourn to the formal restaurant for breakfast on our return journey!
